Maid Marian, the noble and spirited consort of Robin of Sherwood, symbolises loyalty, courage, and independence. Often depicted as a skilled archer herself, Marian stands as Robin’s equal, sharing his commitment to justice and compassion for the oppressed. Though her origins vary across legends, she is consistently portrayed as a figure of inner strength, defying societal norms to join Robin and the Merry Men in Sherwood Forest. Over time, Maid Marian has come to represent a timeless heroine, blending grace with the fierce resolve of the outlaw’s life.

Maid Marian has also been known by various names throughout folklore, reflecting her evolving role in the Robin Hood legend and her connections to different cultural influences:

Marian Fitzwalter – In some retellings, she is given the noble surname "Fitzwalter," portraying her as a high-born lady from the Fitzwalter family, often rebelling against her privileged station to join Robin.

Matilda or Maud – In certain medieval versions, Marian is called Matilda (or Maud), which were common names in medieval England. Some versions specifically refer to her as "Matilda Fitzwater."

Marian of Leaford – Some tales locate her origins in the village of Leaford (or Leffer), casting her as a local noblewoman who turns her back on her aristocratic life to follow Robin in the woods.

Clorinda – In 17th-century ballads, particularly in later English plays and romances, Marian sometimes appears as "Clorinda, Queen of the Shepherds." This pastoral name ties her to a romanticised view of rustic life, but this version of Marian is often distinct from the Maid Marian who partners with Robin Hood.

These names reflect the adaptation and expansion of Marian's character through English folklore, adapting her persona to fit different cultural and storytelling needs across centuries.
